Chair dips

Chair dips is a strength discipline in BYOH, trained with household and building arms and chest. Its ladder runs from 1 rep at Level 1 to 75+ reps at Level 9, and Level 10 is the world record.

The ten levels

BYOH measures a discipline in ten cleared levels. Level 9 is a genuine feat; Level 10 is the standing world record, which is there to be looked at rather than reached.

Chair dips starts at Level 1 with 1 rep. Level 5 asks for 20 reps, and Level 9 - the last level a person can train towards - 75+ reps. The largest single jump is from Level 8 to Level 9, 55 reps to 75+ reps.

How it is done

  1. For this exercise you will need to place a bench behind your back. With the bench perpendicular to your body, and while looking away from it, hold on to the bench on its edge with the hands fully extended, separated at shoulder width. The legs will be extended forward, bent at the waist and perpendicular to your torso. This will be your starting position.
  2. Slowly lower your body as you inhale by bending at the elbows until you lower yourself far enough to where there is an angle slightly smaller than 90 degrees between the upper arm and the forearm. Tip: Keep the elbows as close as possible throughout the movement. Forearms should always be pointing down.
  3. Using your triceps to bring your torso up again, lift yourself back to the starting position.
  4. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

How the attempt is judged

A level only means something if two heroes clearing it have done the same thing. These are the rules BYOH counts an attempt by — they are the rules of a game, not coaching.

What counts as one
One repetition is lowering until the upper arms are level with the floor and pressing back to straight arms.
The set
One unbroken set. You may pause in the supported position for as long as you like; the set ends the moment you leave it.
What you need
A stable, non-slip support at about knee height, feet on the floor. The supported position is arms straight.
What ends it
Sitting down, or a support that slides, ends the set. Partial depth does not count.

What it builds

Chair dips feeds Arms and Chest in a hero’s record, working triceps, chest, shoulders.

  • Triceps
  • Pressing endurance
  • Press control

Chair dips is one of 32 strength disciplines. It shares its household requirement with 6 other strength disciplines. Arms is also built by pull-ups, cross-body hammer curl, chin-ups and 2 more, and a broad attribute needs several of them rather than one taken far.
